Each year the Post Office Travel Money & Crystal ski Resort Report surveys 36 ski resorts in seven of the most popular European ski destinations: Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland. The report compares the cost of ski and boot hire, lift passes and ski school plus lunch and drinks to give a realistic view of what it will cost an adult skier or family staying for a one week ski holiday.
Value For Money European Ski Resorts
The six Italian resorts surveyed represent the best value for UK skiers among the ski destinations of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.
Prices have risen in all resorts this year, with some in Switzerland and France putting prices up significantly, but Sauze d’Oulx still remains one of the most affordable year on year.
This year again, Sauze d’Oulx comes in the top 5, out of 36 ski resorts, for value for money. While Zermatt will cost €1,334.76, Meribel €973.69 and St Anton €1,080.67, Sauze will cost only €663.78.
What People Value About Sauze d’Oulx
1. A friendly and relaxed resort
Always one of the first things people say about Sauze d’Oulx is that it is a friendly resort.
Many long-term friendships are made with people coming back year after year to ski & snowboard in a resort where they feel welcomed, to meet old friends and make new ones.
2. Value for Money
The real world cost of food and drink in Sauze d’Oulx is cheaper than almost all other European ski resorts. With a wide range of restaurants and bars, you can easily choose fine dining with a four or more course meal and the best Italian wine, a simple meal in a trattoria or a takeway pizza – something for every pocket.
While in a resort like Val Thorens (FR) you can pay €17.00 for a pizza in a piste-side restaurant, in Sauze a large slice of the same will cost around €3.50 at Sportinia. A Cappuccino in Sauze costs around €1.50 (on piste €2.00) and a large beer around €5.00 (excluding “Happy Hour” where you will find various cheaper offers around the town).
More prices: panino from €4, toast (ham and cheese) from €3.50, pasta from €9, a glass of house wine from €3, Aperol Spritz from €5.
3. Small resort yet 400+km of pistes
Sauze is linked to the resorts of Sestriere (IT), Montgenevre (FR), Claviere (IT) and Sansicario (IT) each offering something different in terms of pistes and ambience. This area, the Vialattea, or Milky Way ski area, forms one of the biggest rideable areas in Europe. A good number of the runs are in the trees. The ski area offers 212 pistes (7 green, 67 blue, 97 red and 41 black) and 69 ski lifts.
The ski area is characterized by wide open spaces, sunny and panoramic runs. The vastness and diversity of the area can satisfy both the more demanding skiers, thanks to the long and challenging runs, and those who are beginning to ski or snowboard.
4. Nice Ambience and old town
Sauze d’Oulx was originally a traditional mountain farming community and has been inhabited for many years. Sauze was owned by the Benedictine monastery Novalesa Abbey in the early Middle Ages.
5. Only one hour transfer from Turin Airport (by car)
Short transfer times from airport to resort are something that every skier and snowboarder will appreciate. From the airport to Sauze via the motorway (autostrada) is about one hour or so. Public transport takes longer.
