Driving direct to Sauze d&#8217;Oulx can be the most convenient way to travel, even including an overnight stop en-route to make the most of your holiday and to arrive more relaxed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The European motorway network connects to Oulx, the town below Sauze d&#8217;Oulx, via the E70 (A32).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is obligatory to have either winter or all season tyres (with the snowflake symbol) when driving in the Alps in winter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Always check current tolls and directions before you travel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The centre of Sauze d&#8217;Oulx has a traffic limited zone (ZTL). You are only allowed through this is your hotel or apartment owner tells you. They will contact the local police to exempt your vehicle, allowing you to travel through the centre to your accommodation. The least polluting vehicles are generally allowed to circulate (be driven) more freely than those that emit more pollutants. A sticker covers the vehicle for its entire lifetime, and is based on the vehicle&#8217;s Euro emissions standard.<\/p>\n<p>There are six categories in the Crit\u2019Air vignette system. These range from green for the cleanest through to dark grey for the most polluting:<\/p>\n<p>Crit&#8217;Air sticker categories<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 0\/E &#8211; for zero emission electric and hydrogen vehicles &#8211; green sticker<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 1 &#8211; for plug-in hybrid vehicles and Euro 5, 6 petrol vehicles &#8211; purple sticker<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 2 &#8211; for vehicles that conform to the Euro 4 petrol vehicles, and Euro 5, 6 diesel vehicles &#8211; yellow sticker<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 3 &#8211; for vehicles that conform to the Euro 2, 3 petrol vehicles and Euro 4 diesel vehicles &#8211; orange sticker<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 4 &#8211; for vehicles that conform to the Euro 3 diesel vehicles &#8211; burgundy sticker<br \/>\nCrit\u2019Air 5 &#8211; for vehicles that conform to the Euro 2 diesel vehicles &#8211; dark grey sticker<\/p>\n<h3>About the Crit&#8217;Air System<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section section__wygwam\">\n<div class=\"wygwam\">\n<p>The system was introduced by the French government as a way to reduce harmful vehicle emissions in areas where air quality is poorest, such as larger towns and cities.<\/p>\n<p>In these areas, certain vehicles can be refused entry based on the Crit\u2019Air sticker displayed on the windscreen \u2013 either all the time or on certain days where air pollution levels are dangerously high.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently two different types of government-defined low emissions zones in France:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Permanent low-emission zones\u00a0(known as ZCR \u2013 Zone \u00e0 Circulation Restreinte)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Temporary emergency low-emissions zones\u00a0(known as ZPA \u2013 Zone de la Protection de l\u2019Air)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, certain French towns and cities now have emergency schemes that can restrict certain vehicles in the event of particularly high pollution.<\/p>\n<p>If driving in any of these zones, a Crit\u2019Air sticker\u00a0should be affixed to the right-hand side of the car\u2019s windscreen and should be clearly visible at all times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"do-i-need-a-critair-vignette\" data-navigable-heading=\"\">\n<h3>Do I need a Crit\u2019Air vignette?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section section__wygwam\">\n<div class=\"wygwam\">\n<p>All eligible vehicles need to display a Crit\u2019Air vignette on their windscreen to be able to drive and park in restricted traffic zones, such as permanent low-emissions zones and emergency low-emissions zones.<\/p>\n<p>Not all vehicles are eligible for the vignettes. Cars registered before January 1997 and motorbikes and scooters registered before June 2000 are ineligible, and cannot be driven at all where restrictions apply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section section__wygwam\">\n<div class=\"wygwam\">\n<h3>French emergency low emission zone (ZPA)<\/h3>\n<p>As opposed to ZCRs, emergency low emissions zones (known as ZPAs) are temporary restrictions imposed on certain vehicles.
