La forteresse a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite par le Savoie entre 1728 et 1850, sur un projet de l\u2019ing\u00e9nieur Bertola, dans le but d\u2019emp\u00eacher les envahisseurs \u00e9trangers de descendre \u00e0 Turin. Un g\u00e9ant de pierre qui s\u2019\u00e9tend sur environ cinq kilom\u00e8tres dans la Vall\u00e9e Chisone et couvre une altitude de pr\u00e8s de 700 m\u00e8tres. Avec le Fort de Fenestrelle et celui d\u2019Albertino (Vinadio) faisait partie des lignes d\u00e9fensives entre les terres de Savoie et la France. Le Fort, d\u00e9j\u00e0 connu en 1155 et b\u00e2ti sur un site fortifi\u00e9 celtique et romain, fut plusieurs fois remani\u00e9. Le fort du XIXe si\u00e8cle fut \u00e9difi\u00e9 sur le site occup\u00e9 autrefois par le ch\u00e2teau dauphinal, connu depuis la moiti\u00e9 du XIVe si\u00e8cle et d\u00e9truit en 1574. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Occup\u00e9 par les troupes allemandes apr\u00e8s le 8 septembre 1943, le fort fut en partie d\u00e9moli suite au trait\u00e9 de paix avec la France en 1947.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Apr\u00e8s la deuxi\u00e8me guerre mondiale, la structure tomba compl\u00e8tement en ruine, en subissant des d\u00e9gradations et des ablations des mat\u00e9riaux les plus pr\u00e9cieux. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Confi\u00e9 en 1995 \u00e0 l\u2019Association des Etudes d\u2019Histoire et d\u2019Architecture Militaire, le complexe a \u00e9t\u00e9 compl\u00e8tement r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 et affect\u00e9 \u00e0 des expositions mus\u00e9ales, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 plus de 50.000 heures de travail b\u00e9n\u00e9vole. Le long de la dorsale qui unit Pian dell\u2019Alpe \u00e0 Sestri\u00e8re et s\u00e9pare la Vall\u00e9e Chisone de la Vall\u00e9e de Susa se d\u00e9ploie, pour plus de 30 km, presque compl\u00e8tement au-dessus de 2000 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">La parcourir signifie avoir l\u2019occasion unique de d\u00e9couvrir quelques-unes des pages les plus significatives de l\u2019histoire d\u2019un des lieux les plus suggestifs des Alpes occidentales. Ils ne furent jamais dot\u00e9s de mobilier, ni d\u2019armes ; apr\u00e8s leur abandon d\u00e9finitif en 1941 ils furent d\u00e9militaris\u00e9s, mais ils ne furent pas d\u00e9truits avec la dynamite. Le point de d\u00e9part du sentier est \u00e0 30 minutes en voiture de Sauze d\u2019Oulx et la montagne est facilement reconnaissable \u00e0 sa forme pyramidale avec la pointe plate. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">L\u2019ascension du mont Chaberton est une excursion bien connue dans la vall\u00e9e de Suse, surtout en \u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Jusqu\u2019en 1947, le Mont Chaberton faisait partie int\u00e9grante du territoire italien (Mairie de Cesana Torinese).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">En 1898, l\u2019Italie, qui venait d\u2019adh\u00e9rer \u00e0 la Triplice, entreprit de construire au sommet du mont Chaberton une batterie de huit tours de ma\u00e7onnerie surmont\u00e9es de canons tourn\u00e9s vers la France et Brian\u00e7on, d\u00e9fendant ainsi le passage du col de Montgen\u00e8vre. Pour cela, les soldats et ing\u00e9nieurs dirig\u00e9s par le major du g\u00e9nie Luigi Pollari Maglietta ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 une route depuis le village de F\u00e9nils (val de Suse) et ont abaiss\u00e9 d\u2019environ 6 m\u00e8tres le sommet du Chaberton pour y installer les huit tours de 12 m\u00e8tres de haut, correspondant \u00e0 la plus haute chute de neige enregistr\u00e9e. L\u2019ensemble des travaux fut termin\u00e9 en 1910.    <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">En 1906, chacune des tours fut arm\u00e9e d\u2019un canon de 149\/35 ce qui allongeait la port\u00e9e du tir. Mais fut conserv\u00e9e la d\u00e9nomination 35 pour pr\u00e9server le secret militaire. Chaque pi\u00e8ce, servie par 7 hommes, \u00e9tait prot\u00e9g\u00e9e par une coupole blind\u00e9e relativement l\u00e9g\u00e8re. Le fort, parfois surnomm\u00e9 le \u00ab cuirass\u00e9 des nuages \u00bb, faisait l\u2019orgueil des militaires italiens et \u00e9tait alors r\u00e9put\u00e9 comme le plus haut et l\u2019un des plus puissants du monde.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, quand l\u2019Italie entra en guerre aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019Entente, les pi\u00e8ces d\u2019artillerie furent d\u00e9mont\u00e9es pour \u00eatre employ\u00e9es sur le front contre l\u2019Empire austro-hongrois.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Avec le d\u00e9but de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le Fort Chaberton a eu son bapt\u00eame de feu. Le 20 juin 1940, le fort du Chaberton re\u00e7ut l\u2019ordre d\u2019ouvrir le feu contre les ouvrages fran\u00e7ais du Janus, de Gondran, de l\u2019Infernet, des Trois-T\u00eates et de plusieurs batteries de campagne, mais ne causa que des dommages mineurs, par manque de pr\u00e9cision. Les conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques ne permettaient pas aux Fran\u00e7ais de r\u00e9gler leur tir pour r\u00e9pliquer, car le sommet du Chaberton restait voil\u00e9 par les nuages. Le 21 juin 1940 le ciel s\u2019\u00e9claircit et le lieutenant Miguet, qui commandait les deux batteries, donna l\u2019ordre d\u2019ouvrir le feu et six des huit tours furent demoli\u00e9s. Le Chaberton n\u2019\u00e9tait pas totalement hors de combat, les tourelles 7 et 8 continu\u00e8rent \u00e0 tirer les trois jours suivants, sans \u00eatre atteintes par l\u2019artillerie fran\u00e7aise, jusqu\u2019au cessez-le-feu et \u00e0 l\u2019armistice du 24 juin 1940.          <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Le fort, inutilisable, fut abandonn\u00e9 le 8 septembre 1943, m\u00eame s\u2019il fut bri\u00e8vement r\u00e9occup\u00e9 un an plus tard, \u00e0 l\u2019automne 1944, par des parachutistes de la R\u00e9publique sociale italienne surveillant l\u2019avance alli\u00e9e par la vall\u00e9e de la Durance. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019issue de la guerre, le vallon des Baisses, le sommet du Chaberton et la batterie furent annex\u00e9s par la France, d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant, de fait, la fronti\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e du village italien de Claviere. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 1957, tous les restes m\u00e9talliques des tubes et des coupoles blind\u00e9es furent enlev\u00e9s et descendus dans la vall\u00e9e.
