Road Cycling

Sauze d’Oulx and area offers fantastic locations for road cycling whether it be those interested in attempting some of the big climbs of the Alps or exploring some less testing beautiful rides this area can offer.

Among the big Alpine stages nearby featured in the Grand Tours are Moncenisio (Mont Cenis), Col du Galibier, Col du Télégraphe, Col d’Izoard, Col de Montgenèvre and the Col de la Madeleine.

Slightly less demanding rides include Oulx-Bardonecchia and Oulx-Cesana-Sauze di Cesana-Sestriere-Cesana-Oulx and the  Vallée de la Clarée /Nevache.

In 1986 Sauze d’Oulx was itself a stage in the Giro d’Italia. The winner in the stage 14 to Sauze was Ireland’s Martin Earley (just one Irish rider won a stage of the Giro before him, and only one since). The stage was a seven hour, 236 kilometre trek from Savona to Sauze (video of the stage win below).

Even today the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France regularly have stages taking place in the Valle di Susa or Valle Chisone.
