Hiking

Hikes and Walks in Sauze d’oulx

Sauze d’Oulx has many hundreds of walks, marked trails and places to explore on foot from the high Alps to to the Gran Bosco National Park. There’s something for people of all fitness levels.

Maps are available from Sauze Tourist Information along with books and guides. The equivalent of Ordnance Survey maps can be bought in the newsagents in Sauze and in Bar Jouvenceaux.

Recommended maps include IGC 104 Bardonecchia – Monte Thabor – Sauze d’Oulx with coverage at 1:25,000 in a series of contoured, GPS compatible walking maps highlighting hiking trails including long-distance routes, ski routes and alpine accommodation. IGC 105 is also useful as is Fraternali 3 Val Susa for coverage from Monte Genevris to the Testa dell’Assietta via the Strada dell’Assietta.

Maps in this series have contours at 25m intervals, enhanced by shading and graphic relief for very clear presentation of the terrain. An overprint highlights local hiking paths, indicating difficult sections, long-distance routes such as the GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi), Tour Monte Rosa, etc. Also marked are ski routes showing hazardous sections. The maps also indicate locations of various types of alpine accommodation: refuges, shelters, hostels, campsites, etc. Cable car lines and chair lifts are marked, and for road users local roads with restricted entry are indicated. Each map covers approximately 22 x 25 km /13 x 15 miles. All the maps have a 2-km UTM grid. Map legend includes English.

An excellent guidebook is available Sauze d’Oulx a Piedi by Sylvie Bigoni. It details a wide variety of walks in Sauze d’Oulx with photographs, maps along with walk timings, altitude and more.

The book is currently only available in Italian. It can be purchased from the Sauze Tourist Information Office.

Also available is A Piedi In Alta Valle Susa with a variety of walks around the high Susa Valley.
